Occasionally it seems necessary to act in a public way to differentiate a moment or situation from non-existence - to call attention to it as one would a sunset. The authority of a presenter of this type does not rest in his/her formal relationship to the subject (owner, salesman, distributor, tour guide) but in the simple acknowledgement of the fact of the subject’s reality. (S)he requests only a momentary deviation in focus from company in order to share an experience and form an agreement regarding proximate space. Though this documentary impulse is inspired by an exceptional realness of things, it is closely related to the magician’s desire to stage unreal miracles. When it is difficult to agree on the truth, we can agree on a lie (and vice versa). If some number of these directed experiences are arranged, any subsequent time-based architecture can benefit from a qualifying term like “art”. The imperfections of the resulting project are its most important features. |
