Returning the Spirit of Hal to the Wilderness
by Dillon
de Give
In late March 2006 a one-year-old,
35 lb coyote mysteriously appeared in New York City’s Central
Park. Over the next two days Hal (named after the Hallett Nature Sanctuary
where park workers first confronted him) created a news sensation, leading
police helicopters and confused onlookers in a chase around the park
before being felled by a tranquilizer dart. Hal then died unexpectedly
during a routine tagging procedure prior to being released into the
wild. |

On the third anniversary of Hal's untimely
death I made a reciprocal human journey:
starting in Central Park and making my way to wilderness
and suburban areas in Westchester. I made a best guess reverse walking route
of what Hal may have
done on his way into NYC. There was a send-off event held at the City
Reliquary (press release).
Visitors were invited to bring small gifts for the spirit of Hal the coyote.
The gifts were distributed
at various points along the 66 mile, three day path and documented. These
are the monuments to Hal.
